Hungry and homeless
November 17, 2006

A peanut butter and jelly sandwich-making brigade was one activity during last week’s Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, which raised awareness about the issues and helped those in need.
“The best way to put an end to hunger and homelessness is to raise awareness,” said student Jennifer Perrusse, co-director of the Volunteer Center.
Since many students aren’t affected by these problems, they don’t understand the underlying reasons or causes of hunger and homelessness, she said. When they see a homeless person on the street, they don’t think about the circumstances that put the person there or what actions they can take to fix the problem, Perrusse said.
This year’s awareness week kicked off with this semester’s Faith and Reason Dialog. The event explored the issues surrounding hunger both locally and globally, and discussed the sustainability of food resources and our planet.
Additionally, students were “hungry and homeless in Red Square” throughout the week in an effort to raise awareness about the plight of the homeless, and the Hunger Banquet portrayed worldwide hunger and social class issues by feeding participants according to social class. Students volunteered serving hot meals at local soup kitchens on Friday.
The event was sponsored by the Volunteer Center, Campus Ministry, Residence Hall Association, PLU Community Garden and the University of Puget Sound.
