Nikki Johnson named preseason All-American
November 17, 2006
Women’s basketball standout Nikki Johnson has been selected as a preseason second team All-American by D3hoops.com.
Johnson is the lone athlete from the Northwest Conference to make the list. She is also the only athlete from the entire West Coast to be selected as a preseason All-American.
Johnson is the reigning Northwest Conference most valuable player. Last season she led the Lutes to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Division III national tournament. Averaging 14 points and 9.8 rebounds a game, Johnson helped PLU to a 24-4 record and the conference title last winter, making it the program’s fifth crown in the past nine seasons.
During those nine seasons, the Lutes have finished no worse than third in the conference. In the NWC preseason coaches’ poll, the Lutes were picked to defend their title, receiving seven of the nine first-place votes.
The men’s and women’s basketball teams begin conference play on Friday, Dec. 1 with match-ups against Linfield College. The women play at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m. in Olson Gymnasium.
