Annual shopping bazaar features holiday gifts

The annual Yule Boutique will feature food, live music and hundreds of handcrafted items for sale on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Olson Auditorium.

Each year, approximately 100 vendors from around the Puget Sound region gather to sell their handcrafted items, which include everything from jewelry, pottery and woodworking to soaps and Christmas wreaths. Before a vendor is allowed to rent a booth, a jury must approve their wares to ensure the quality of the items, said Anita Christian ’59, chair of the boutique’s 20-member steering committee.

“If you like handcrafted items, the Yule Boutique is hard to beat – they scrutinize heavily that things are quality,” she explained.

The event features musical entertainment from a five-member recorder-playing group in the morning and accordion player Dick Myking in the afternoon. Traditional Scandinavian pastries, lefse and Greek food will also be served.

New artisans in pottery, jewelry and rosemaling will be selling their wares this year, Christian said. Participants in the raffle will be entered to win pottery made by PLU art faculty members.

Typically, the event attracts between 2,000 and 2,500 people, Christian said. All the proceeds from the event are used to fund student scholarships.

The boutique is the signature event of PLU’s Women’s Club, a collection of female faculty and staff, and the wives of faculty and staff. The boutique began in 1971 as a place for fellowship, and 35 years later, the organization and execution of the event is the key function of the club.

“We make it a gathering place for the community,” Christian said. “People have such a good time.”

Entrance to the boutique is $3, but PLU students are admitted free. The Army ROTC will be operating a shuttle to bring shoppers from the various parking lots across campus to the entrance of Olson.
