Students studying in Oaxaca are safe

November 03, 2006

The southern Mexican city of Oaxaca has been the subject of recent national and international press coverage due to civil unrest provoked by a prolonged teachers’ strike and growing dissatisfaction with Oaxaca's governor.

Currently, 10 PLU students, two UPS students, and PLU professor Paloma Martinez-Carbajo are in Oaxaca as part of the PLU/UPS fall semester program. The group reported that they have been in no danger, but they are being cautious because of the strike and subsequent disorder.

The group left Oaxaca for a previously scheduled two-week study tour to Mexico City on Friday. After the tour concludes on Nov. 18, the university will reassess the conditions in Oaxaca and decide if the students will remain there or be moved to Puebla, Mexico. The decision will be based on information provided by PLU’s contacts in Oaxaca and updates from the U.S. Department of State.

PLU’s study away program in Oaxaca is designed for advanced Spanish language students with an interest in Latin American studies. The program explores the intersection of development, culture and social change through the lens of the dynamic and evolving context of contemporary Mexico.

Located in the southwestern Mexican state of Oaxaca, the program explores the rich diversity of contemporary Mexican culture. It strives to build understanding of one of the U.S.’s closest – yet least understood – neighbors.
