Families experience student life this weekend

November 03, 2006

Students will welcome their family members to campus during the annual Family Weekend event beginning on Friday, Nov. 1.

The weekend gives family members an opportunity to learn about student life at PLU and participate in a host of activities and entertainment both on and off campus. Registration begins at 6 p.m. on Friday evening in the UC lobby.

The first full day of activities kicks off with two panel sessions on Saturday. Each session will run twice, once at 8:30 a.m. and again at 9:30 a.m. with a 15 minute break between each:
  • Rose McKenney, assistant professor of environmental studies and geosciences and co-chair of the Sustainability Committee, will host a sustainability session in the University Center. Along with other members of the committee, the panel will discuss PLU’s commitment to sustainable building practices, food and water usage.
  • A global education session in Xavier 201 will feature Susan Mann, director of the Wang Center, and her staff discussing PLU’s wide array of study away opportunities and how they contribute to students’ academic and personal development. Last January, the university was the first to have students studying on all seven continents simultaneously.

Saturday also includes a Lute Brunch at 10:30 a.m. in Olson Gymnasium, a tour of the Tacoma Art Museum at 1 p.m. and a football game against Willamette University at 1:30 p.m. at Sparks Stadium. Students will present a “Night of Musical Theatre: What I Did For Love,” featuring a variety of contemporary and classic Broadway musical numbers, at 8 p.m. in Eastvold Auditorium
The weekend comes to a close with a Pancake Feed at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12 in the University Center Commons. University pastors Nancy Connor and Dennis Sepper will lead the Family Weekend Worship service at 11 a.m. in the Mary Baker Russell Music Center, and Paul Tegels, university organist, will lead a tour of the Gottfried and Mary Fuchs Organ afterwards.
