Women’s Center moves closer to campus
November 03, 2006

After spending most of last week moving, the Women’s Center officially opened the doors to its new location today – a house situated on 121st Street South behind Ordal and Ingram Halls.
“We have more room now,” said Bobbi Hughes, director of the Women’s Center. “It has all the elements we needed.”
The space includes a larger living room with new furniture and a fireplace, and a separate library and meeting room that will allow visitors to plug into the Internet. Additionally, the center’s three employees are now operating out of the same place.
The center received a federal grant last year to expand its programming to include a Men Against Violence project coordinator and a victim’s advocate. Jonathan Grove and Jennifer Warwick were hired, but the old center didn’t have enough room for both of them.
Grove was operating out of the Diversity Center and Warwick didn’t have a private space to meet with victims. But at the new location, each has their own office, and Warwick occupies a private, comfortable room with its own private, separate entrance.
“It’s secure, confidential and peaceful,” Warwick said.
The new location is also close to the dorms and more accessible to the entire campus community, Hughes said. More faculty, staff and students walk by regularly, and Hughes thinks that will make people more likely to stop in and check out the center.
Now that Groves is located in the Women’s Center, he will be able to integrate his group of volunteers – all men – into the activities of the center, Hughes said.
“It will show we’re working for everyone on campus,” she said.
The new space will allow the Women’s Center staff to expand the activities they provide, Hughes said. It gives them flexibility by allowing two groups to meet at the same time – one in the living room and one in the library.
The community garden, which was located next to the old Women’s Center on lower campus, will remain in the same plot for now, Hughes said. Plans are being discussed to move it closer to the center’s new location in the future.
Hughes said an open house will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 15. The details are still in the works, but it will include food, music and a blessing of the house.
