Campus Safety welcomes new director
October 27, 2006

The new director of Campus Safety, Jesus Villahermosa, began work at PLU last Wednesday.
He is replacing the outgoing head of Campus Safety, Marsha Stril, who is leaving PLU after two years to become the chief of police at Bates Technical College in Tacoma. A farewell reception for Stril will be held on Monday, Oct. 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Campus Safety office. Her last day is Tuesday, Oct. 31.
Villahermosa is an experienced law enforcement professional who brings a rich background to the director position. Since 1981, he has been a deputy sheriff with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, most recently in the University Place detachment.
The hiring of Villahermosa continues the unique relationship PLU has with the sheriff’s department. As a master patrol officer with the sheriff’s department, Villahermosa signed a contract with PLU to be the director of Campus Safety.
This arrangement brings a full-time director to PLU who has an extensive background in school safety and law enforcement. It also gives PLU access to sheriff’s department resources.
Villahermosa also serves as a speaker and trainer at schools and corporations across the United States and Canada about school and workplace related violence. He has worked with over 300,000 professionals on issues relating to gangs, youth violence, workplace violence, school safety, and rape and assault prevention.
Villahermosa has been the featured keynote speaker at national and Canadian educational conferences. He has also spoken to students all over the country about making choices, consequences and respect.
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Villarhermosa has been a resident of Tacoma for 37 years. He and his wife, Tiffany, have two children. Amanda is a high school senior and Benjamin is a junior.
A formal opportunity to for the campus to meet Villahermosa will be scheduled in early November.
