Ramstad Commons provides resources for job seekers

October 27, 2006

Students unable to participate in last week’s career fair – or any student seeking work or an internship – will find valuable help in Ramstad Commons’ Career Library.

The collection is located in the Ramstad Commons office downstairs in Ramstad Hall. The resources available can help students prepare a resume, write a letter of application, prepare for an interview and figure out how their area of study translates in the work world. Some of the materials in the collection include:
  • Periodicals: This is one of the most overlooked sources of job and internship leads. The Commons subscribes to several business magazines and newspapers that can help guide the job search.

For example, Inc. magazine’s special issue with the 500 fastest growing private companies in America provides a great source of job leads. If the company is among the fastest growing, it’s probably looking for good employees to add to the staff. Take a look at this list to see if any of the companies match what you are looking for in an employer, be it an internship or a job.
  • Book of Lists: Ramstad Commons also has the Book of Lists, which provides profiles of the top 50 or 100 employers in the Puget Sound area in a number of different categories, including private companies and public corporations.
  • Choices magazine: Choices magazine is sent each fall to colleges and universities across the country and features leading companies that are focused on recruiting new college graduates. There are three issues: Business and Liberal Arts, Science and Engineering and Diversity. About two-thirds of each publication is focused on exploring the job market, marketing yourself and succeeding on the job. The remainder is advertisements from employers seeking college applicants. The magazine even indexes the employer-advertisers by location, occupation, Web site, alphabetically, etc. This magazine is free to PLU students.
