New faces discover new places

August 30, 2006

This Thursday morning, 670 new first year students and their parents will gather in Red Square to check into the residence halls and kick off Fall Orientation.

More than 200 transfer and international students will join in the orientation, dubbed “Discovering Horizons Together,” that runs from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4. The event is designed to introduce new students to PLU and help them understanding the workings of campus life.

“The first few days before classes are set aside to let students gain a foundation that will allow them to be successful here,” said Allison Stephens, assistant director of Student Involvement and Leadership.

Activities on Thursday will begin later in the day, with programming for both new students and their parents that includes a welcome address by President Loren Anderson and an ice cream social. Throughout the weekend, students will meet with their academic advisor, attend athletic events and have the opportunity to ask lots of questions.

On Saturday, Sept. 2, new students will venture off campus to experience Pacific Northwest in the third annual “On the Road.” Small groups of new students are led on day trips by faculty, staff and returning students.

The students choose to take part in a one of 40 different trips, from rock climbing in the North Cascades or sailing on the Puget Sound to volunteering at the Pierce County AIDS Foundation and perusing the Museum of Glass in downtown Tacoma. To view a complete list of trips, click here.

Returning students who are living on campus this year can begin checking in to their residence halls at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31. For more information, contact Residential Life at 253-535-7200 or rlif@plu.edu.

The first day of classes is Tuesday, Sept. 5. The day will run on a modified class schedule as classes will be cancelled from 9 to 11:30 a.m. to allow students and faculty to attend University Convocation and the Campus Involvement and Job Fair.
